Worth the Wait
And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.”
Luke 2:22-32
One of the many sub teachings of the Christmas story is that God is worth the wait. Israel had waited hundreds of years to hear from God. There was no prophet to say “Thus says the Lord.” There was no person He was using to communicate that the Messiah was coming just yet. The people of Israel may have been wondering if God would ever speak again. Simeon, however, was ready and waiting for the coming the Christ. The Holy Spirit had told Simeon that he would not die until he saw the Christ.
Simeon lived in hope for the manifestation of the revolution given to him from Holy Spirit. All of Israel longed for their Savior. The silence from heaven must have been unbearable. God would be faithful to His word to Simeon. Simeon, being a man who obviously desired the Lord and loved Him, was a vessel ready to see the Lord’s Christ. Would you consider yourself one who is waiting upon the Lord? Do you find it worthy of your time to allow your days to be obsessed the glory of God and the hope if His coming? I believe that God chose Simeon for such a time in history as this, because He knew Simeon’s heart for Him.
The Lord did show Himself to Simeon. When Jesus was presented at the temple joy filled Simeon. He was filled with joy for the fulfillment of the coming Messiah who was to come save both Jew and Gentile! He felt peace and release from this world once he met the One who was not of the world.
You see, the Lord is good. He is faithful. We can never over communicate the faithfulness of our Father. He is true to allow circumstances to come to pass to words He has spoken. I want to encourage you to long for the Lord as Simeon. To be led by Holy Spirit as he was. To be filled with so much joy at the presence of the King of Kings! Simeon had waited to the end of his life to see this King Jesus. I encourage you to meet Him today. He can release you from the pressures of the world. Give you reconciliation with the Father, and bring you peace never imagined of. Allow the Lord’s faithfulness to take root in your life, and reap the blessing go the promised King’s presence in your life, just as Simeon did.
