If you missed this past Sunday of worship, you are in luck! Here is a recap of the very beginning of a new teaching series entitled “Beyond Me.” Beyond me is a teaching on the Gifts that Holy Spirit gives children of God. In this first week, we didn’t touch on any gift in particular, rather, we delved in Romans 12:1-2. The foundation of the gifts, a life lived unto Jesus. Below are the “highlights” of Sunday’s message to get you up to speed for this coming Sunday’s message.
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore - A Call to Identity and Ignition
Anytime the word “therefore” is used in Scripture, you look back. When you look at Romans 10 and 11 you see the Messiah Jesus being lifted up as the One and only means of life and salvation. He is being proclaimed as the One who has saved and reconciled the lost to the Father.
This appeal to the Romans is for them to remember who they are and what fuels them to live empowered in Christ. Because Jesus died for me, His mercy and Grace empower and motivate me to live for Him. You and I do not live on our own strength and power, but on His. We are able to live a life that is a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to God, because of where we are found in Christ. We able to be alive and sacrificial in living, because greater is He who is in me, than he who is in the world. When your flesh get’s tired remind your spirit who and what is fueling your faith. God’s Mercy is the fuel for walking out our Faith. This is not a call to be mentally strong, but strong in mercy. It is in that place you find mental strength and mercy’s empowerment to live for Jesus.
Walking Sacrifice
God’s word calls us to be a living sacrifice. We look no further than Jesus for this model. He is the One who demonstrated this life to us. He walked to please and reveal the Father. So too do we. We do this when we live in the aforementioned identity in Jesus Christ. We are sons and daughters of God called by His mercy and love. Jesus is the walking sacrifice that is our model. He say’s “come, and follow me.”
Let the walk be holy. We make too many excuses for the actions of our flesh. When we remember who we are by the mercy of God, our spirit does not tolerate the flesh acting out-of-order. This is a holy walk, because merciful holiness has made you a new person.
How is this possible? Holy Spirit. Our relationship with Jesus gives us relationship with Holy Spirit. When I’m walking in the Spirit Jesus left me I am empowered and cleansed to be holy. Make plans to be empowered by God, not excuses for the flesh.
Spiritual Worship
Spiritual worship is far more than words that recited off of pro presenter on Sunday morning. We went over this significance of the Greek word latreia and its call to our lives unto Christ.
λατρεία
One of the best ways I can think to translate this to english in concept and context is “To minister to God.” Our lives are to minister to His name. Think of the last time a pastor came and ministered to you specifically. Keep that ministry moment in mind as you live your life unto Christ. Our life and everything about it deserves His complete attention and honor. We live our lives holy, pleasing to God, and acceptable by ministering to His name with our life. So, I live His word out. Not in religion, but in relational empowerment from Christ.
Mind
God calls us to transformation away from the world not to conform to it.
Transformation requires the renovation of my mind. – What I use for renovation will determine the final product. Don’t take short cuts. Get in His Word. Overtime, the foundation and renovations will be exposed through the trials of life.
There is no substitute for God’s Word. Since there is no substitute, there is no excuse to not be in it.
Make plans for renovation, not excuses that will lead to the demolition of your mind
What does this have to do with Gifts?
The Romans 12:1-2 believer is a healthy person in Christ able to live out and use these gifts to please and reveal the father. We are called to live beyond ourselves. We are supernatural testimonies of the Christ. There is nothing normal about us. Therefore, we yield to His ways and His desires so we can be the Bride He has made us to be. God wants to use us to reveal Himself. If we don’t know who He is, we can’t know who we are in Him. When we know who we are in Him, we are ready and empowered to live a life beyond ourselves for His name and glory sake.
See you Sunday for week two of “Beyond Me.”
